Netbook with UNR

Sunday!, Finally I found a free time to write an article for my blog. For this article I thought of a suitable topic and final I caught one. That is UNR (Ubuntu Netbook Remix) and Netbook.

To see the screen cast just download the video and see how it look like. Watch

In my previous article I mention that I bought a netbook. So my total concentration moves to what kind of operation system match for my netbook. At that point I found this open source operation system specially optimize for the netbooks.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) is a 'remix' of the standard Ubuntu Desktop release, enabling you to work better on devices with small screens, such as netbooks and sub-notebooks. You have access to all the same applications any Ubuntu user has, plus some enhancements to the user interface. And last but not least the optimization for intel atom processors.

For example: All applications are opened "maximized", giving you the most of your screen space.

· Just one, top, panel.

· A "Desktop" that gives you easy access to all applications and Places.

· Self-definable Favorites giving you fast access to your most used applications, websites and storage.

These things are what they ask their product. Therefor I want to feel the actual performance of the UNR. So I installed UNR 9.10 and see the deferent with Windows 7. The thing is UNR is damn fast when we compare it with Windows 7. The reason is lot of unnecessary modules remove from the parent development. As a result of that, the booting times, application running delay are very low.

The other thing is less hardware requirement.

· Processor: Intel® Atom™ processor

· RAM: 512 MB

· Storage: 4 GB Flash disk (SSD) or hard disk

Compatibly of UNR with popular Netbooks. See

I’m writing here only summery of my feel. It can be not tally with your choice. So better install it yourself and see how much it wonders you. For that Ubuntu will release new revolution product in few days (29/04/10). That is UNR 10.04. So download it and try yourself.

Thanks

Comments are more than welcome ....

Back to Blog spot

After a long time period I hope to blog again. Since last time, it’s a was a hell of a time even couldn’t see the blog spot. Internet surfing was also limited. Now the time has passed. Got a new job, as a lecturer in an institute near to Colombo. As my wish, I have enough freedom to do any stuff about myself. As a result of that I think to look around the some serious blogging.
Time to time, same as revolution of my carrier I have updated my knowledge on the technology also. It’s a must to mention about my laptop. Even though I mention it is as laptop, exactly isn’t. It’s a new sleek Netbook, handy, portable, awesome boy :D.

eeepc 1005HA Asus
  • Intel Atom 1.66GHz processor
  • 10.5hrs battery (Highly recommended – Generally it lasts long as 9.5Hrs)
  • 160GB hard
  • 10.1” Screen
  • 1.3M camera
  • Wi-Fi 802.11n
Even though the processor shown as little bit lacking, I’m working some kickass weighted softwares on it (Visual studio 2010, Netbeans 6.8). The reason about the mentioning about the processor is, when I rate my machine in the windows 7, it gives out the processor rating value as 2.3 (Goddamn MS :D ). And also this netbook is great for entertainment. Things like watching movies, music … because it is portable and has a 16:9 ratio on the screen.
The other important thing is the operating system. To gain maximum performance, lots of open source Projects has developed OSs for the netbooks. Those are UNR (Ubuntu netbook remix), Crunch bang and so on. I have experience with both of those OSs and actually they are greatly in love with this netbook.
I think you got an idea about this eeepc 1005HA Asus and hope to write an article on Eee + UNR in near future. See you soon

Sinhala Writer Version 2.0 Released

The Sinhala Writer version 2.0 is next generation of the Sinhala Writer. Here it provide more attractive features (with New Apple Theme) more than the previous one. As same as in later, it gives solution to create Sinhala text on a computer using an ordinary English keyboard. Or we can say, it is like writing Sinhala in English letters. But the final result comes in Sinhala letters.

Therefore, you do not have to refer to character maps and type weird key combinations to produce Sinhala text. Sinhala Writer is ideal for producing short, informal documents, which can then be easily used to produce complex formal documents.

The Sinhala Writer is a Java related application (i.e. created using JAVA programming Language). So you can not directly run it in a computer without having the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) installed.
